Our Story

For Darius Garland, basketball has always been more than a game—it’s been a pathway to opportunity, growth, and success. From his early days on the court to becoming an NBA star, Darius has never forgotten the impact that sports and education have had on his life. His foundation was created with a simple but powerful mission: to give back and provide young people with the same opportunities that shaped his journey.

About Darius

Early Life, Education & High School Success

Darius Garland spent his early years at Banneker Elementary School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. In 2012, his family relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Darius attended Brentwood Academy and joined the varsity basketball team as an 8th grader. He helped lead his team to four state championships and became a three-time Tennessee Mr. Basketball winner. In 2018, he was selected for the McDonald’s All-American Team.

College Career at Vanderbilt

Darius was a five-star recruit and ranked among the best point guards in the 2018 class. After graduating high school, he attended Vanderbilt University, where he played under coach Bryce Drew. He was recognized as the best recruit in the program’s history.

Road to the NBA

Unfortunately, Darius suffered an injury after playing only a few games at Vanderbilt. However, the setback did not stop him from achieving his dream. He recovered and entered the NBA Draft, following in the footsteps of his father, former NBA player and Gary native Winston Garland. Darius was drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

NBA Career & All-Star Recognition

In 2022, Darius was named to his first NBA All-Star game. He is currently regarded as one of the best point guards in the NBA and continues to prove himself as a leader on and off the court.

Giving Back to His Hometown & Basketball Camp & Foundation

Despite his success, Darius has not forgotten his roots in Gary, Indiana. He has provided food and toys for children and families in the community. Recently, he hosted over 200 youth at the Darius Garland Basketball Camp, focusing on both basketball skills and the importance of education. His Darius Garland Foundation continues to develop new initiatives to support the youth in Gary, ensuring his impact goes beyond the game.
